Monash University’s objective

To create an iconic and world class research facility that brings together researchers working in distinct yet related fields of research and learning to stimulate creativity through innovation.

Background

Developed in partnership by Monash University and the CSIRO, and co-funded by the Australian Government through the Education Investment Fund, the New Horizons Centre collocated more than 300 Monash University and 150 CSIRO staff who are supported by state-of-the-art information and communication technology.

Johnstaff’s role

Johnstaff was engaged as Project Manager to lead the project through all phases of design and delivery from Concept Design onwards.

Upon commencement, Johnstaff established and implemented all project governance and project management systems for the successful delivery of the project. A detailed procurement plan was developed and agreed and Johnstaff played a key role in the development of the bespoke Tender and Contract documents.

Addressing the issues

Johnstaff developed a fast-tracked design and construction methodology using a series of early works packages to de-risk the project and ensure our clients met their government funding program requirements.

We subsequently managed the preparation of the main works tender documentation and procurement of a managing contractor, contract administration, the successful staged completion, commissioning and handover to our clients.

The project required significant quality assurance, commissioning and certification planning given the mix of high-end computer labs, PC2 laboratories, an animal research facility, teaching and training facilities, dedicated industrial laboratories, skills bays, physics laboratories and an immersive visualisation platform.

Another significant project challenge was Monash University’s desire to achieve a six star as-built (education) certification, which was achieved on completion.

Outcomes

  • The New Horizons Centre collocated and integrated more than 300 Monash University and 150 CSIRO staff and comprises of 20,000sqm of high-end research facilities

  • Fast-tracked design and construction methodology de-risked the project and ensured funding obligations were met

  • Six-star as-built (Education) certification achieved

  • Contracts adhered to federal and state legislation and code requirements
