James Cook University’s objectives

To develop a clinical practice building in Townsville to address demand for innovative teaching, community and commercial services.

Background

This project formed part of a fully master planned medical precinct at the university (Discovery Rise). The master plan provided James Cook University (JCU) with a wide range of health and retail services that were required to address unmet demand for innovative teaching, community and commercial services.

The Clinical Practice Building provides a state-of-the-art centre for student clinical practice and services open to the community, including dentistry, rehabilitation, pharmacy, radiology, psychiatry and physiotherapy. All of the medical facilities work as both commercial and learning facilities. The project also included the installation of shop frontage for retail outlets, a café with deck views, ESD technologies and an integrated chilled-water cooling system. The total floor area of the development is more than 12,300sqm.

Addressing the issues

Johnstaff validated design and construction activities through all phases of the project. This involved significant compliance work and sign-off processes to ensure built works adhered to the contract.

Our role also involved management of time, quality and costs, as well as the certification of all requisite documents.
