St John of God Health Care’s objectives

SJGHC is a one of the largest Catholic providers of health care services in Australia. The Midland Private Hospital Project is designed to deliver a truly unique destination and private healthcare environment for Midland and the surrounding communities.

Background

Operation of the SJGHC Midland Private and Public Hospital (SJGMPPH) commenced in November 2015. In June 2023 the WA Stage Government triggered their contractual right to purchase the private beds for public use, effective from 1 July 2026.

The project will provide a full-service standalone hospital experience in a circa 17,000m2 facility, offering comprehensive medical and surgical services, some of which will be offered for the first time in the region.

The scope of the project will include: 96 overnight inpatient beds, 24 bed and 6 chair short stay and day procedure unit, four general theatres, two procedure rooms, cardiac / vascular catheter laboratory, radiology, pathology, pharmacy, patient administrative and support functions, support service infrastructure including catering, engineering and biomedical services, dining and end of trip facilities, café and retail, dedicated car parking facilities.

The long-term vision for the Hospital will see the delivery of hospital, allied health and community services, and public amenity integrated within the precinct to ensure a sustainable private hospital service that will encourage innovation, collaboration, socialisation and interaction.

Johnstaff’s role

Johnstaff was engaged to provide full Project Management and Superintendent services from concept design to completion. Johnstaff has also provided input into the functional brief prepared by SJGHC.

Johnstaff was required to deliver the facility within a significantly constrained budget and timeframe to meet the deadline driven by the WA State Government’s buy back of the private beds.

Delivering world-class private healthcare to Midland

The new St John of God Midland Private Hospital will provide a full-service, state-of-the-art private healthcare experience, offering essential medical and surgical services, including interventional cardiology – a first for the region. With 96 inpatient beds, advanced operating theatres, and specialised care units, the hospital will more than double private bed capacity in Midland. Designed to meet growing demand, this contemporary facility will ensure seamless access to high-quality private healthcare, right at the community’s doorstep. Set for swift delivery, it will bridge the gap in private hospital services ahead of the current facility’s transition to a fully public hospital in 2026.
