Congratulations to our hard-working team in New Zealand, led by Todd Riordan and Michael Breuker, with the AgResearch Tuhiraki facility winning an Excellence Award for Education Property and Sustainable Building in the recent Property Council Award Gala. These awards add to the NZIA Canterbury Commercial Architecture Award that Tuhiraki received last month. Tuhiraki opened its doors only nine months ago, and this excellent start is no surprise to anyone who has experienced Tuhiraki. The Canterbury Award describes it as:

"This meticulously considered, self-assured building serves as a showcase for AgResearch's cutting-edge scientific capabilities and a catalyst for innovation across the region. Clearly referencing the rural-agricultural vernacular, the design incorporates astute material and colour choices and provides a homage to context."

As part of its four-campus model, the $103 million Tuhiraki is a centre for excellence. It showcases AgResearch's capabilities and drives agricultural innovation by integrating the existing Lincoln Research Centre into a new facility on the Lincoln University campus.

Johnstaff is proud to have provided Design and Project Management services to support AgResearch, starting from the strategic brief through staged project handovers and operational commissioning. Project lead, Todd Riordan, commented::

"We are incredibly grateful to be part of the AgResearch Tuhiraki project. The project has been guided by the core principle of "mahi tahi", which emphasises working together, collaboration, cooperation, and teamwork. We successfully overcame initial budget challenges by working closely with science staff through intensive design sprints, resulting in a new, cross-functional approach to delivering science that optimises laboratory space by using a 'serviced apartment' model, allowing labs to be booked based on seasonal needs. The AgResearch Tuhiraki project is an outstanding example of how collaboration not only leads to exceptional built outcomes for the client but also makes the project more enjoyable and rewarding for all parties involved in the design and delivery process."
